Zhang Jia, second violin principal
Jia Zhang studied the violin in China and London and has appeared as a soloist in China, UK, USA, Israel, New Zealand, France, and Switzerland. Her extensive orchestral experience includes performing with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Philharmonia Orchestra and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. She began her violin training at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing and was the first student from China to receive full scholarships for undergraduate and postgraduate studies at the Royal Northern College of Music. During her studies in London she was awarded many prizes including the coveted Royal Philharmonic Society 'Emily Anderson Award' from the Musician’s Benevolent Fund Strings Award (2001), third prize in the Uralsk International Violin Competition in 2003, and a major Education Award from the ABRSM. In June 2008 she was a finalist in the Carl Flesch International Violin Competition and was awarded a special prize and a fellowship for further studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. From 2006 to 2010 she was appointed as a violin tutor at the Royal Northern College of Music. Jia Zhang currently tutors in violin and chamber music at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing. She has been a member of the City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong since 2010.
