Jonathan Berman has been hailed by the press as “the charismatic British master of the baton” and is internationally acclaimed for his performances in operatic, orchestral and contemporary repertoire. He has performed in Europe, Scandinavia, the UK and the USA with orchestras including the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra, Britten Sinfonia, Aldeburgh Festival Orchestra, Turku Philharmonic Orchestra, Basel Sinfonietta, Bilkent Symphony Orchestra, Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra and the Hagen Philharmonic Orchestra. He has also had engagements with London Sinfonietta, Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, New European Ensemble, Ensemble Modern, Ensemble KNM Berlin and the Crash Ensemble. Jonathan Berman was the winner of the prestigious Kempinski Young Artist Programme in Berlin which enabled him to work with Franz Welser-Möst, The Cleveland Orchestra, and with Michael Tilson Thomas at the New World Symphony. A tireless champion for contemporary composers, he has conducted numerous world premieres of works by Mark Anthony Turnage, Alexander Goehr and Gunther Schuller, among others. In the field of opera he has conducted more than 30 operas at the London’s Southbank Centre, Royal Opera House, English Touring Opera, Grachtenfestival and Opera Studio Netherlands. Jonathan Berman has curated a number of festivals in the Netherlands, Germany and the UK, including a series of concerts at London’s Southbank Centre, critically acclaimed as “the most exciting concerts in London for 10 years”.
